Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved cosmetic treatment designed to improve the appearance of crow’s feet, fine lines, and wrinkles. During a Botox treatment, Dr. Nisnisan administers injections into specific facial muscles. Each injection contains a small amount of Clostridium botulinum, a purified botulinum toxin. This toxin paralyzes your facial muscles, preventing them from contracting and creating deeper lines and wrinkles.

While Botox is not permanent, some patients do experience long-term benefits from the treatment. Because Botox paralyzes the muscles for up to five months, the skin begins to heal and may reverse lines caused by the muscle movement.

What happens during a Botox treatment?

When you arrive at Royal Oaks Medical Home and Wellness Clinics, you’re shown to a room where you can prep for your Botox treatment by washing off any makeup. Dr. Nisnisan asks you to make facial movements, while he watches to see what muscles are contracting and causing your crow’s feet and frown lines. He marks the optimal points to inject the Botox formula.

He then prepares the injection, mixing a small amount of liquid into the vial. Once it’s ready, Dr. Nisnisan gives you 5-7 Botox injections. For most people, these are not painful but feel more like a pinprick. Once Dr. Nisnisan has injected the medication, he may ask you to move your face, allowing the Botox to set into the muscles.

As soon as that’s finished, you’re free to go and can return to your normal daily activities right away, as Botox does not require any downtime.

How do you know if Botox is right for you?

Dr. Nisnisan can examine your skin and muscle movements and determine if Botox can help you reach your goals. Botox is not a harsh treatment, and many have it done a few times a year to maintain its effects. Side effects from Botox are rare but may include:

  • Swelling, pain, or discomfort in the injection area
  • Neck pain
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth

In a small percentage of users, Botox can cause eye issues, including double or blurred vision. Rarely, decreased eyesight may occur. If you want to learn what Botox can do for you, schedule your appointment online today.
