Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to improve the texture and tone of your skin. By stimulating the skin’s natural healing process, microneedling boosts collagen and elastin, reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Also called collagen induction therapy, Dr. Nisnisan can do microneedling on the:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Arms

The procedure can also reduce the appearance of:

  • Surface scars, including those from acne
  • Loose skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Pore size
  • Skin texture

What happens during a microneedling treatment?

When you see Dr. Nisnisan for a microneedling treatment, you’re taken to a private room and prepped for the procedure. He cleans your skin and applies a numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Depending on your goals, Dr. Nisnisan may also apply a collagen-rich serum to enhance the effects of the microneedling.

Using the SkinPenⓇ -- a small, handheld device with 12 needles -- Dr. Nisnisan gently pierces the skin, moving the device across the treatment area. Because the needles are small and numbing cream is used, most patients say the procedure feels like having sandpaper rubbed against their skin.

Once the treatment is complete, Dr. Nisnisan may apply a soothing cream, promoting the skin’s natural healing process. Your skin may be red, sore, or swollen for 24-48 hours, but no worse than a mild sunburn. In some cases, there may be pinpoint bleeding or bruising. Dr. Nisnisan recommends that you avoid direct sun exposure for a minimum of two weeks; in some cases, he may suggest a longer period.

How many microneedling treatments do you need?

The number of microneedling treatments needed depends on the severity of your skin condition and your goals. Dr. Nisnisan typically recommends 3-6 treatments at least four weeks apart. That allows your skin to heal and collagen production to increase.

If you’re getting microneedling done for scar tissue, more treatment sessions may be necessary. Preliminary results may be visible in about four weeks, with optimal results occurring around 12-16 weeks.

If you’re ready for noticeably smoother, more even skin, it may be time to try microneedling. Contact Dr. Nisnisan for an initial consultation to determine if this is the right treatment for your skin issues. You can even schedule your appointment right away online.
